Discovering a Forgotten Treasure: While working through the Shackled City and Savage Tide Adventure Paths, I stumbled upon a hidden gem in the back of old Dungeon Magazines called the Campaign Workbook. These short, two-page articles began in September 2005 (Issue 114) and were designed to provide Dungeon Masters with quick, actionable tools for key D&D concepts.
The Goal of d20.pub: Because these resources are useful for all D&D players—not just those playing in my favorite setting, Ptolus—I am transcribing them onto my generic D&D site, d20.pub. My goal is to rescue this amazing content from terrible, unsearchable PDF scans and make it web-accessible and mobile-friendly for everyone.
What’s Already Available: I have already started transcribing several key sections, including:
- Fences and Dealers: Mechanics and NPCs for selling magic items or stolen goods.
- Informants: Rules for gaining intelligence in city-based campaigns.
- Healing for Hire: A guide for parties without a Cleric, featuring churches and magic shops.
- Abandoned Buildings: Creative ways to add flavor and encounters to empty city structures.
- Merchant Madness: Two deep dives into guilds, covering everything from the Lamplighters to the Fishmongers.
System Agnostic Inspiration: While the original stats are for D&D 3.5, the vast majority of this content is system agnostic. Whether you play 5e, Pathfinder, or any other TTRPG, these articles provide plot devices, NPC motivations, and creative sparks to get your “brain percolating”.
How You Can Help This Rescue Mission
- The Transcription Challenge: There are over 100 of these articles currently languishing in poor-quality PDFs. I am committed to getting them all online for free, but I need the community’s help to speed up the process.
- Support via Patreon: Every dime from my Patreon goes directly back into the channel and the website. These funds will be used to hire transcription experts to pull the text out of those old scans and format it for the modern web.
- Volunteer Your Time: If you have free time and want to help transcribe these pieces yourself, head over to d20.pub and use the contact form to reach out. I’m happy to give credit to anyone who helps save this piece of RPG history.
- Give Credit Where It’s Due: These authors worked hard to create these ideas, and it’s a shame to let them be forgotten. By moving them to a searchable, mobile-friendly format, we ensure their work continues to inspire Narrators for years to come.
Keep an eye on the Campaign Workbook page for updates!
